The Latin American community is one of London’s fastest growing BAME groups. In 2008, our community was made of over 113,500 people. Since then, we have seen a rapid increase of people coming from Spain, Portugal and Italy, escaping the economic crisis. Most UK Latin Americans are residing in London (61%), and most have the right to vote in local and London elections (at least 45% have either UK or EU nationality), according to the No Longer Invisible report from 2011.
The cultural and economic contribution of Latin Americans to London is reflected in the wide offer of Latin American restaurants, festivals, cultural events, media and commercial initiatives. However, and in spite of being a highly qualified group with high rates of employment (85%), many live in poverty and suffer from exclusion and exploitation.
CLAUK understands that voting is not only a right that we should be able to exercise, but also a means through which we can voice our concerns, support policies that represent our interests and empower ourselves. For these reasons actively seek to promote political participation of Latin Americans living in the UK.
